s our publication this year indicates, our doors are always open for alumni and alumni parents to return home and stay connected with St. Anne’s. Some have very natural ways to do so, with twelve alumni as current parents and seven others as faculty or staff next year. I would like to share some other ways alumni and alumni parents can step through that archway to join us in the future. There are of course some traditional (and a few fairly new) “open houses” of sorts where we always cherish seeing our alumni community. A few of the regular events include the All-School Picnic, Holiday Sing-Along, Young Alums Holiday Party, Founders’ Day, May Day, and Graduation. These fun-filled events allow opportunities to reconnect with former faculty, staff, and classmates while also enjoying and reliving some traditional St. Anne’s activities and celebrations. Newer organized events like the evening of Wine Tasting in April, alumni happy hours around town, alumni lacrosse at Denver University in June, and a Family Movie night in August (all hosted by the Alumni Board) are just a few of these annual

opportunities to gather, share stories, visit with former teachers, and again, have fun. Alumni are always welcome and invited to all of the above. We often field questions from alumni and their parents about how they can stay connected and/or involved at St. Anne’s. There are some simple but greatly appreciated options here. The most important of these is to share your current contact information (especially email addresses) with our Alumni Office. If you have not received an email of some sort from us in the past year or more, we would love your updated information. A quick call or email to Julia Brown, Development and Alumni Coordinator, at jbrown@st-annes.org, can rectify this problem and enable us to keep you better informed about all that is happening at St. Anne’s.

We also know social media is a growing source of communication for our community, especially alumni. As a result, we have recently taken steps to increase and strengthen our social media presence. We would love to have alumni and/or their parents follow us on Facebook, Instagram, and/or LinkedIn. If you visit our website (which has also been enhanced and improved) at www.st-annes.org/alumni, you will find links to all these social media sites. By September, you will also find a more fully developed alumni news page and other articles, videos, and

information about the school past and present. As you hopefully still recall, however, one of the hallmarks of St. Anne’s has always been and continues to be the power of personal interactions. As a result, nothing substitutes for a visit in person. It also remains true that the ongoing support and involvement of our alumni and alumni parents is a uniquely powerful strength of our community. Waiting for a more formal event to return to St. Anne’s is far from your only opportunity. We still cherish unannounced visits to campus to stop in and chat with faculty and staff, wander the grounds, and observe a class. It benefits our current students greatly to have a chance to see and even speak with alumni, as it makes a lasting impression for the days when they too will be alumni. Our Alumni Board is always looking for new volunteers to assist with their efforts and help create and coordinate new and current alumni activities. If you have a particular talent or expertise you would like to share, please let us know. We have had alumni and alumni parents speak with student groups and classes over the years on everything from regions of the world to science topics to charitable efforts to improve our world. Just this year, Ellie Wells ‘15 returned to

campus several times to educate our community about her passion for the African Library Project. She then helped coordinate a community book drive that raised over 1,000 books to start a library in Malawi, ironically also named St. Anne’s! There are also opportunities to join with current families in continuing to fulfill our mission and heritage of serving others. The Outreach Committee organizes many opportunities throughout the year, such as helping to build a Habitat for Humanity house in the spring, participating in the annual Sam and Grace Masoudi Memorial Walk, serving meals to the residents at Sacred Heart House, and contributing to items and efforts for various charitable organizations. Support from alumni and alumni parents in these endeavors is always welcome, and more information about these activities can also be found on our Community Outreach page under the Community link of our website. Finally, you can help us continue to recognize and celebrate our alumni in a new manner this year! Our Alumni Board is establishing a new Distinguished Alumni Award to be announced this summer and awarded every two years. Nominations from alumni and alumni parents will be

greatly appreciated, and we look forward to announcing our inaugural recipient next winter. Please see page 69 for more information about the nature of this award and how to submit nominations to the Alumni Board.

So there you have it: the old adage that you can never return home just does not hold true at St. Anne’s Episcopal School. More importantly, we desperately want and need the continued engagement of our alumni and their families to maintain the amazing culture, community, and program they played such a critical role in helping to create. Our door is open, so please just walk on in and make yourself comfortable.

We could easily apply these same words to all of our alumni. St. Anne’s alumni continue to come back to visit us every year and amaze us with their talents and ambitions. They attend numerous events throughout the year, support our growing St. Anne’s Campaign, choose to send their own children to St. Anne’s, and dedicate themselves to educating the next generation of learners by becoming teachers here. We could not be prouder of our St. Anne’s alumni. To all our alumni, thank you for making our lives richer through your continued engagement with the school. KATJE FALKENSTEIN - CLASS OF ‘95 What is your favorite memory from your time as a student at St. Anne’s? Hard to pick just one...Mr. Lane reading The Education of Little Tree in fifth grade, getting reading help from Mother Irene in second grade, spending the night at St. Anne’s in the Hills in fourth grade, soccer with Mr. Dicker in seventh and eighth grade.

What inspired you to come back and teach at St. Anne’s? St. Anne’s really is home. I felt seen and loved as a child. I wanted to be a part of a community where every person, child and adult, has the opportunity to find themselves and feel valued.

What do you like most about teaching at St. Anne’s? I work with some of my best friends and I get to help children grow, learn, and laugh. I am lucky to work with children preschool through eighth

grade and see them grow the whole way.

Was there anything shocking about seeing the school through the “teacher lens”? I remember taking everything a teacher said to heart, as the absolute truth. I now know that all teachers do their best to give advice, but we don’t always know the answer. I also think I took for granted all my opportunities here at St. Anne’s as a student. I now realize there are many people making those special things happen and it takes a lot of work!

As a faculty member, can you tell us about one of your fondest memories since working at St. Anne’s? I’m not sure I can pinpoint one memory but I do love the feeling I get when I get a hug from a second or third grade student. It’s like they know that I see them for who they are and they know I love them. That is the best part of being a teacher.

How would you describe St. Anne’s in three words? Community, friendship, love

KELSEY SMITH - CLASS OF ‘01 What is your favorite memory from your time as a student at St. Anne’s? I’ve been thinking about this one for awhile. I honestly can’t say I have a favorite memory. I have so many moments that still warm my heart that I can’t choose just one. What is my favorite overall about my time at St. Anne’s was that I was nurtured and given such a great foundation of character. I also appreciate the legacy of who I strive to be today as a kind person who stands up for what I believe is right, just as the Sisters did. Plus, the other lasting legacy that warms my heart time and time again is the presence of St. Anne’s people (classmates, teachers, and colleagues) who are still such important people in my life.

What inspired you to come back and teach at St. Anne’s? I had taught fifth grade for a year in Colorado Springs while I was getting my master’s degree, and while I loved the kids, the environment was not supportive enough to make teaching sustainable for my energy and my soul. I took half a year off to revisit if teaching was the profession for me, and in February of 2011, my mom suggested that I do some subbing at St. Anne’s. I realized that teaching at St. Anne’s was exactly as I had

hoped it would be in a community that truly cared about me. The next fall, I was Nancy York’s first grade assistant (and she had been my first grade teacher), and I’m now in my fourth year as Lower School Spanish teacher and sixth year teaching at St. Anne’s. It’s hard to believe!

What do you like most about teaching at St. Anne’s? I love the relationships. While St. Anne’s has, of course, changed in some ways since I graduated in 2001, the people it attracts (whether as faculty/staff, parents, and students) are still so amazing. I am excited every day to come to school and spend time and grow with those in the St. Anne’s community. I feel very lucky. Also, knowing how I give of myself to the job after school hours, on the weekends, and always having ideas percolating in the back of my mind, I never feel exhausted or drained by it. To be in a place that gives me back what I give to it is the best feeling. The energy never depletes; it just circulates.

Was there anything shocking about seeing the school through the “teacher lens”? The only shocking piece in this new position as teacher was the confirmation that the special “spark” that I had felt as a student at

St. Anne’s existed just as strongly as a faculty member in this amazing community. The piece that was challenging for me was getting used to calling the teachers I had as a student by their first names.

As a faculty member, can you tell us about one of your fondest memories working at St. Anne’s? To sound like a broken record, it is the overall effect of St. Anne’s on my life that I am fondest about. This is a place where I am encouraged to grow and learn while guiding and/ or accompanying others in their journeys as well. I form bonds with students, families, and colleagues that I hope will last a lifetime. What a gift it is to be in a place where I receive such support and love and can give it out as well. It is the best self-sustaining cycle.

How would you describe St. Anne’s in three words? Home, family, warmth

Middle School Math Teacher and Science Assistant

KENDALL EARLY - CLASS OF ‘05 What is your favorite memory from St. Anne’s? My favorite memory from St. Anne’s was our eighth grade trip to Washington, D.C. Even though I had been to D.C. numerous times, I had never visited the specific memorials, monuments, and exhibits that we were able to visit on that trip. Learning more about the amazing men and women whose momentous actions and decisions laid the foundation for some of the most important events in our nation’s history was incredible. During this trip I also almost experienced one of the most terrifying moments of my life when I was one knock away from having to wake up John Dicker and other chaperones after being locked out of my room following a night out with family friends. No question that this experience holds particularly fond memories for me because I was able to share it with all of my friends, knowing that this was our last major trip as a class.

What’s your favorite food from the new dining hall? Now, anyone who truly knows me understands that I love breakfast food more than any other food in the world. When I smell pancakes, eggs, and, of course, syrup, as I am walking

down the hallway to the new dining hall, I’m pretty sure that I am more excited than the kids!

I have also enjoyed working with the incredible kids who attend our school. I’ve loved both seeing their passion for learning and their “Aha!” moments when they have grasped a difficult concept. The students make it an absolute joy to come to work every morning!

As a fourth grade teacher, can you tell us about one of your fondest memories?

What do you like most about teaching at St. Anne’s? Honestly, I enjoy working with all of the wonderful educators and children who are members of our community here at St. Anne’s. In terms of the teachers, it has been incredible getting to know everyone on a more personal level and learning from all of the unbelievable breadth of knowledge they have acquired over the years. It has been especially rewarding to develop a peer relationship with the very teachers who taught me while I was a student here. This is truly something that I will treasure for years to come.

For me, it has been watching my fourth graders interact with their preschool buddies. Knowing that these wonderful fourth graders are still learning how to treat each other with respect and how to work together, it is a remarkable sight to see them be so kind and loving to these younger children who definitely look up to them. I truly enjoy seeing them shift to wonderful leaders so quickly and effortlessly!

Kendall will be taking on a new role for the 2017-2018 school year as a middle school math teacher and science assistant. Kendall has been a tremendous fourth grade assistant and middle school coach for the past two years. Prior to returning to St. Anne’s, Kendall taught high school algebra for two years in Atlanta as part of the Teach for America program. He holds a Bacherlor of Arts from Stanford University.

LUCY MURPHY - CLASS OF ‘02 What is your favorite memory from your time as a student at St. Anne’s? I have so many memories of St. Anne’s. One of my earliest memories was visiting Mother Irene with my sister after school. I was learning to play the violin so I would perform for Mother, and I remember she would always take out her hearing aids whenever I started playing. She was smart because I was terrible.

What inspired you to come back and work at St. Anne’s? I think the biggest thing that inspired me to come back to St. Anne’s is that this community is a part of my heritage. My grandmother, Harriet Kelly, was a volunteer when

St. Anne’s was a home for sick and disabled children and my mother, Rose Kelly, worked here for 35 years as the Director of Admissions. Since being a student here, I always felt that I would end up working here and living out the mark that these amazing women, especially Mother Irene, left on our community. I am proud to call St. Anne’s my home.

What do you like most about working at St. Anne’s? I love being a part of an organization that is working to make the world a better place. Although I don’t work directly with the students, I am proud to be a part of a community that believes building character through empathy and outreach is one of the

most important aspects of living a full life.

As a staff member, can you tell us about one of your fondest memories since working at St. Anne’s? Since starting two years ago, there have been many moments where I can reflect and reminisce on many of my own experiences as a student at SAES. There are so many things that haven’t changed, but what I am most empowered by is that as the world changes, St. Anne’s stays true to its mission and never loses sight of the goal to raise kind and compassionate human beings. My fondest memory so far is being recognized as a changemaker school by the Ashoka Changemakers Network. I was blessed to be a part of this process, and it is a constant reminder of all the things we do, big and small, to make an impact on our community both locally and globally.

JACK BREDAR - CLASS OF ‘08 We are thrilled to announce that Jack Bredar ‘ 08 will be taking over as a teaching assistant at St. Anne’ s for the 2017-2018 school year. Many in our community already know Jack for the terrific person he is and his deep love and understanding of the SAES community. Jack graduated with a B.A. from Carleton College in Minnesota this spring. He also spent a year teaching young children in Latin America before starting college; he is fluent in Spanish, is a graduate of NOLS, and is “Wilderness First Responder” qualified. Needless to say, he is ecstatic to be returning home to Denver and St. Anne’ s, and he cannot wait to give back to the place he credits for so much of his success. We are fortunate to have him join us.

MARGARET MITCHELL - CLASS OF ‘90 What is your favorite memory from your time as a student at St. Anne’s? I have to choose one?! Here’s just a sample: The early spring mornings with blue skies and a warm sun and the frenzy of growth all over campus, color, scents, surrounding us... Orienteering through the pouring rain in St. Anne’s in the Hills (and having no idea what I was doing)... The wonderful feeling of freedom at 3:00p.m. when, as middle schoolers, we crammed into the bathroom to change for whatever practice or game we had, clothes strewn everywhere, chatter, giggles... Teachers – all with their own stories and history at St. Anne’s and our class...

Why did you decide to send your child(ren) to St. Anne’s? We chose to send our child to St. Anne’s for the intangible values that permeate the walls, the soil, the air at St. Anne’s and that help grow good people – being kind, serving others, doing what’s right, providing the individual attention to help each child grow. St. Anne’s has a strong reputation for nurturing and forming kind, thoughtful young women and men who are well prepared academically.

How has being an alum impacted your experience as a St. Anne’s parent? On a practical level, it has been easier to know where everything is and to know many of the staff! On an abstract level, I have to continually balance what I am seeing and experiencing about St. Anne’s in the present with what I know of it from the past. I don’t want to assume I know what is happening or why, so I need to pay closer attention than I might if I weren’t an alum. At the same time, I know I can trust the heart of St. Anne’s, and I also know I have a responsibility to continue to be part of that “heart”.

What has changed the most since being a student? What has changed the least? The campus, the physical plant itself, has changed the most. The beauty

and care of the grounds has not changed, even if the actual gardens have. And kids are still kids, even if fashions change!

What is your favorite part of being a St. Anne’s alum? And a St. Anne’s parent? My favorite part of being an alum is that I know I can always walk on campus and feel the welcoming kindness that is classic St. Anne’s. As a parent, my favorite thing is that now my child experiences that every day and hopefully will continue to throughout her life.

EMILY KAKEL - CLASS OF ‘92 What is your favorite memory from your time as a student at St. Anne’s? One of my favorite memories as a student at St. Anne’s was putting on the play Hans Brinker and the Silver Skates in Mrs. Zinn’s fourth grade class. Her classroom was in the building where the new amphitheater stands, and it was the only classroom in that building. We transformed the entire space into our theatre. The old offices and closets became our changing and prop rooms, the bathrooms became glamorous hair and makeup rooms, and the classroom became our stage. We crammed all of our parents into our makeshift theatre and acted our hearts out. Mrs. Zinn even let us wear real ice skates during the performance! I doubt the play was more than 30 minutes long, but the weeks preparing and the way the building felt like a real working theatre during that time has made it a memory I will never forget.

Why did you decide to send your child(ren) to St. Anne’s? We decided to send Dylan and Chase to St. Anne’s because once we came to visit it was clear that the integrity of the school felt the same as it did when I was a student. We were excited for Dylan and Chase to learn

and humility, whether they are on the St. Anne’s campus or elsewhere. If our parents- like our teachersactively model the St. Anne’s values at home and when they are out in the world, our children will know, intrinsically, how to live those values when they grow up.

What has changed the most since being a student? Lunch has changed the most! and grow in that positive, supportive and loving community.

How has being an alum impacted your experience as a St. Anne’s parent? As a St. Anne’s student, I did not recognize the deep and positive impact that the school’s focus on values and good manners would have on me and my fellow graduates. I also did not fully appreciate the tremendous reciprocal effort between school and home that is required to successfully raise young people who reflect and embrace those values. As a parent, I now see that it was the strength of the shared commitment my parents and teachers made together to passing those values on to me that made me who I am today. I must bring the lessons learned at school home, continuously guiding my children to practice empathy, kindness, respect

What is your favorite part of being a St. Anne’s alum? And a St. Anne’s parent? My favorite part of being a St. Anne’s alum is knowing I had a wonderful, happy, and very academicallychallenging time here. I know it prepared me well for academics in high school and beyond. Socially, I graduated with self-confidence and a strong moral character. As a parent, my favorite thing is watching Dylan and Chase have a similar journey and knowing they will be ready to take on the world when eighth grade comes. They are surrounded by amazing teachers and staff, they are learning to be conscious and caring citizens of St. Anne’s and the world around, and they are happy to go to school...most days!

EMILY LORENZ BARRETT - CLASS OF ‘95 What is your favorite memory from your time as a student at St. Anne’s? It is incredibly difficult to pick a favorite memory. The obvious big ones such as May Day, the Washington, D.C., trip in eighth grade, Graduation, and the annual Family Picnic come to mind immediately, but it is the culmination of all the random little memories that made my time at St. Anne’s so special. One favorite was our sleepover in the brand new library. We ran around that beautiful empty building with clean painted walls all night and it was a blast. I have fond memories of soccer with Mr. Dicker - listening to Tom Petty in the van on our way to games. We even went to a Tom Petty concert at Fiddler’s Green with Mr. Dicker and the team - which ended with rain and very muddy clothes! Mr. Dicker’s math class with his plastic projector roll and colorful markers was so challenging but fun at the same time. I remember Dr. Figlino showing us why never to smoke a cigarette by inhaling and blowing into a Kleenex to show the dirty ring it left (it stuck with me!). When it was finally our year to dance the maypole, I remember making myself a tad shorter to ensure I lined up next to a particular boy. Who

doesn’t remember diagramming sentences? (Yes, I actually enjoyed that!). St. Anne’s in the Hills also holds some fun and special memories.

Why did you decide to send your child(ren) to St. Anne’s? When we found ourselves moving back to Denver in time to apply for my daughter to start kindergarten, it just felt meant to be. The thing I was most lamenting in Chicago was that there was no St. Anne’s. My experiences at St. Anne’s and the friendships formed there are central to almost every memory of my childhood. The small, close-knit nurturing community paired with academic excellence is unparalleled. Touring campus with Lori Frank (on lack of sleep from moving across the country one week earlier with a three-week-old baby) was surreal and so comforting. Memories flooded back, and I couldn’t wait to give my kids the gift of experiencing this special place.

How has being an alum impacted your experience as a St. Anne’s parent? I love sharing stories with my kids. They love to hear about teachers they have that I had as well. When we have a few extra minutes in the Main Building, we stop to look at the

pictures of my old teachers and they love to find their mom and aunt in the class pictures. Mother Irene is still a central figure at the school and, at least to the young ones, seems like a mystical figure. They love to hear about how Mother Irene read to us in a tiny library filled to the brim with books and stuffed animals. Walking through campus brings back so many fun random memories.

What has changed the most since being a student? What has changed the least? It feels like so little has changed. Obviously the Dining Hall / Performing Arts center is a huge change from the tiny room in the main building we used to pack into or the little room off the gym that we used for drama, but the sense of community these places bring is the same we felt in our less luxurious confines. We loved the tiny makeshift backstage of Mrs. Casperson’s magical little drama room. Mr. Sigler no longer has his art building, but his art room in the new Lower School Building still has the same smells and feel. There are pieces of art still hanging in there from my classmates. I fondly remember Mr. Comfort’s warm welcome and strong handshake at the back gate at 8am. My kids will remember the

same of Mr. Smiley. Mother Irene, though not physically here, remains a strong part of St. Anne’s in the mission and honoring tradition. Some things haven’t changed at all - May Day follows the same format by the minute as it did 20 years ago. The family picnic and eighth grade carnival is the same fun kick-off to the school year.

What is your favorite part of being a St. Anne’s alum? And a St. Anne’s parent? St. Anne’s is such a wonderful, caring community to be a part of. I know my children are in a very nurturing environment in which they are surrounded by great teachers, friends, and families who will help them grow emotionally, socially, and academically. My time at St. Anne’s shaped me socially and academically for success through high school and college. It was the greatest gift my parents could have given me, and I feel so lucky to be able to give the gift to my kids.

CLASS OF 2014 REUNION

he St. Anne’s Class of 2014 attended a reunion organized by Emma Domich on campus in August 2016. Over a third of the class attended the event and re-lived some special St. Anne’s traditions. They played Risk and Danish Rounders and completed the evening with a viewing of their class video. It was a fun evening with a great turnout! Thanks to all who participated.

his year, current St. Anne’s parent and Associate Head Coach to the DU Men’s Lacrosse team, Matt Brown, graciously offered to host the alumni lacrosse game at the University of Denver stadium. A number of alumni came out to play on the iconic field and cheer in the stadium. It was a really fun day and a huge treat to be able to play in a college setting.

ST. ANNE’S COMMUNITY WINE TASTING

n April, the Alumni Board hosted its annual Wine Tasting event, where a portion of the proceeds from the sale of wine are donated back to St. Anne’s. This year’s theme was “Around the World,” and wine from various regions across the globe was served. Special thanks to Primo Vino for supplying the wines and to the Dawson family for donating beer from their new brewery, Briar Common. With over one hundred attendees, it was a successful event. Next year, we hope to add an alumni/parent biergarten. If you are a brewer and interested in participating, please let Julia Brown (jbrown@st-annes.org) know! MAY QUEEN

he May Queen is an eighth grade girl elected by middle school students and faculty as the young woman who most closely personifies the ideals of St. Anne’s. She is crowned queen at May Day, a celebration in early May where students and parents gather to sing songs, dance around the maypole, and honor spring traditions. This year’s May Queen was Margaret Bird ‘17, daughter of Jeff Bird, Middle School teacher and beekeeper. Margaret Bird was also this year’s valedictorian.

ach year, the St. Anne’s Middle School faculty and staff select a student who they feel best represents the ideals and mission of St. Anne’s. A student, by definition, is still very much a work in progress, and this award in no way implies perfection. Instead, what it celebrates is the child who is hard working, even when there are struggles; who takes risks that encourage growth but that may also mean failure; and who has a love for academics, the arts, and athletics. Above all, this student has discovered that being a friend means being kind and understanding. This year’s winners were Joseph Wall ‘17 (left) and Kyle Nowak ‘17 (right).

MOTHER IRENE OUTREACH AWARD

he Mother Irene Outreach Award goes to the student who volunteers the most number of service hours during the year. The 2016-2017 winner was Izzy Desjardins ‘17 who spent most of her volunteer hours training service dogs. The entire eighth-grade class had an impressive year of community service with over 3,000 hours earned.

CLASS OF 2012 CARE PACKAGE RESPONSES

ach year, our Alumni Board sends care packages to St. Anne’s graduates who are currently college freshmen. In October 2016, the Alumni Board stuffed over 40 packages to send to the St. Anne’s Class of 2012, filled with the “essentials” for midterms, including a St. Anne’s coffee mug, Cyclone-colored jelly beans, and Mother Irene’s chocolate chip cookies. Each freshman also received a personal letter written by one of our current eighth grade students. And our college freshmen were thrilled! Here are a few of their sentiments: “I

INTERVIEW WITH MAYA CEDERLUND ‘17 Reflections from a recent St. Anne’s graduate on her nine years at the school. Your favorite tradition: The All-School Picnic. Being able to fun around with my friends and eat cotton candy.

Favorite teacher: Mr. Shields, because he was the first teacher I met in middle school. I could lean on him when I needed to. I also really like Ms. Bishop, but not the subject that she teaches.

Favorite part of the campus: The Sunken Garden; it is so pretty all year round.

Scariest moment:

Who has been your favorite guest speaker:

When we had three tornado drills in a row and the boys used it as an opportunity to pass gas. I was sure we were going to die one way or another.

We have so many, I can’t remember.

Favorite changes to the school: Everything has changed in the years that I have been at St. Anne’s. They have all been great.

First memory of the school: Meeting Beka Berry and hearing about her dog. We became friends right away.

What will you miss most: My friends and the beautiful campus. I am really going to miss my teachers and friends and look forward to coming back on campus as a big high schooler.

What do you not like: I am not crazy about the whole grain pieces of sadness in the cafeteria, but they have good miso soup.

What has been your favorite out-of-school activity: I like the Colorado Trip and the Sand Dunes, also the zip lining. I am sure that the ski trip and the D.C. trip will be fun too.

What is one word you would use to describe St. Anne’s: Welcoming Thank you St. Anne’s for a wonderful nine years!

FACULTY AND STAFF Kyra and Alan Smiley will travel to Barcelona, Spain to visit their daughter Amanda Smiley ‘11 who is studying abroad there this summer. Fortuitously, this year also marks Kyra and Alan’s 30th wedding anniversary. After Barcelona, they will journey onward to France and Italy as part of their celebration. They look forward to the once-ina-lifetime experience with great anticipation. Fifth grade teacher Bill Lane and his wife Nancy are adjusting to life as empty nesters. Their children Emily Lane ‘07 and Billy Lane ‘09 have made major life milestones. 1, 2 Julia Brown, Development and Alumni Coordinator, welcomed her second daughter, Quinn Marie Brown, on January 26, 2017, weighing just over 7 pounds. Her older daughter Finley loves being a big sister. This summer, St. Anne’s Director of Admissions, Lori Frank, will attend a family reunion in Wisconsin and an admissions conference in California. She’ll spend some time with her daughter, Sarah Frank ‘07, who is studying at the University of

Wisconsin. Lori’s son, Ryan Frank ‘05, and his fiancée, Katie, are planning their August 2018 wedding. 3, 4 Rick Sigler - Life is good; kids are great; grandkids are great; will ride out this summer searching for clues.

Kathy de Russy, former St. Anne’s faculty member, saw that Jessica Andersson Barbour, also a former St. Anne’s faculty member, and her husband, Chris, were traveling to the Slovenia area. Kathy knew that Perry Reed and his family were stationed in Slovenia so she communicated with Perry and gave him Jessica’s information. (Perry is a former St. Anne’s staff member as is his wife, Kelly). Perry and Jessica messaged. Perry was in Germany, but his family was still at home in Slovenia. A visit was arranged. 5 Sarah Gower, former teacher, and her husband Justin just had their first child: Abram Justin Gower Gibson. He was born on Thursday, October 27, 2016, weighing 8 lbs., 3 oz.

FACULTY AND STAFF Chaperone’s Erin Ménard and Patty Jordan led the St. Anne’s trip to France and Spain in June with ten middle school students. They started out in Paris where they were met by their Parisian trip leader, Sophie.  They explored the city’s monuments, museums, parks, courtyards, and tasted typical French foods such as escargot, macarons, and éclairs.  On just one day, they walked 19,000 steps and climbed 52 flights of stairs!  After three nights at the 17th-century youth hostel in the Marais, they traveled south by TGV to Carcassonne where they met their host families.  After a welcome potluck, students spent the evening with their host families.  Many visited the medieval citadel by night.  The next day, they worked on a community service project to weed and clear out an 18th-century bridge and channel on the famous pilgrimage route of Santiago de Compostela.  The students worked so hard that they finished before noon.  They then ate lunch at a nearby river in la Bize Minervois, took a dip, and had ice cream.  Students also visited a typical festival and tasted specialties from the region, Occitania.  The following day was spent at Lake la Cavayère

with host families.  After swimming in the lake, students challenged their fear of heights on a ropes course in the afternoon and spent the evening with the families.  They then said goodbye to the host families and boarded a bus to Barcelona.  While there, they visited Gaudí’s Park Güell then spent the afternoon at the beach before visiting the Gothic Quarter.  The next day, they saw the Sagrada Familia Basilica, had a talent show in the park, visited Gaudí’s Casa Batlló, debriefed the trip in the Barcelona University gardens, and ate a nice farewell dinner.

CLASS NOTES CLASS OF 1961 1 Jim Smith ‘61 owns a real estate brokerage, and his personal transactions have nearly doubled in the last year to the point where he is ranked among the Top 100 agents for the Denver Metro area for 2016. What he’s most proud of is that he has never prospected. Virtually all his buyers and sellers come to him from reading his weekly “Real Estate Today” column in the Denver Post and four weekly newspapers. And that ability to write well was clearly born under Sister Irene’s teaching at St. Anne’s! That’s why he’s happy to be the founding member of the Mother Irene Society. If anyone reading this chooses to utilize his services at any time in the future, he pledges to tithe 10% of his earned commission to St. Anne’s. Rita and Jim celebrate their 13th wedding anniversary in June and still feel like newlyweds, loving their home in Golden backing to Lookout Mountain. They are looking forward to a trans-Atlantic crossing in April/ May on Cunard’s Queen Victoria and a hiking tour of Italy’s Amalfi coast in September/October. Life is good! CLASS OF 1982 2 Sean Keefe ’82 has joined Mullen

High School’s Office of Philanthropy and Engagement as Assistant Director of Alumni Engagement. Previous to his present appointment, he taught for twenty-four years, sixteen of those years in the classroom at Mullen. His previous experience within the development landscape was in his role as Alumni Board President at St. Anne’s. Sean’s coaching duties over the years have included head positions at both the junior varsity and varsity levels in the arenas of lacrosse, basketball, and soccer. From 2008 to 2010, Sean was the boys’ varsity soccer coach at Mullen High School. Over his three years as head coach, the team compiled a 36-18-5 record that included back-to-back semi-final appearances in the Colorado 5A state playoffs. Before moving to development and alumni relations, Sean taught senior English and journalism at Mullen. He was also the co-coordinator for Mullen Today, Mullen’s online newspaper. This spring, Sean will graduate with a master’s degree in education from Saint Mary’s College in Moraga, California.

Carlin Callaway ’88 completed her doctorate project in July 2016 and earned her Doctor of Nursing Practice from the University of Colorado School of Nursing. In October 2016, she finished the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, D.C. What an accomplishment! After 19 plus years as a Navy officer (now an O-5), Carlin will retire in September 2017. Although she’ll miss the East Coast and spending time with special friends and relatives, she’s looking forward to living in Colorado. Carlin hopes to begin her civilian career at a teaching hospital, where she’ll be able to care for oncology patients and provide support for their loved ones. CLASS NOTES Jones, Sarah & Andrew Stettner ‘95 with children Riley and Cooper. CLASS OF 1991 1 Argy Stathopulos Maniatis ‘91 and her husband Nick Maniatis live in Albuquerque, NM. They have two sons, Demetri, age 7, and Pani, age 5. Argy is the Director of Marketing for the University of New Mexico. 2, 3 David Callaway ’91 continues as a seventh grade social studies teacher at Rocky Heights Middle School. At the end of the school year, he again chaperoned middle school drama students for six days in the Big Apple. They visited Times Square, Central Park, the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, the 9/11 Museum and Ground Zero, NBC Studios, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, the Museum of Natural History and Planetarium, and the Intrepid Air and Space Museum. David’s daughter Lena is a second grader at Acres Green Elementary School and continues to like school, particularly reading, science, music and art. CLASS OF 1994

Luke Kirkland ‘95 is the Teen Specialist at the Waltham Public Library outside of Boston. After five years handling graphic design and communications for the Cambridge Public Library, he got the opportunity to work with youth and build a new teen program from scratch. His twins Patrick and Anna were born in November 2012. While searching

for merino wool baby clothes for Patrick and Anna, JP was surprised by the limited options and came up with the idea of this clothing line in between double midnight feedings, neighborhood strolls, and soul searching. CLASS OF 1996 6 Anthony Lambatos’96, sixth grade boys basketball coach, and his wife April, welcomed baby Adelynn Likely Lambatos to the world on January 10, 2017, weighing 6 lbs., 6 oz. Christie Osborne ’99 graduated from CU School of Medicine in 2014 with three other St. Anne’s alums: Tom Seibert ‘99, Sarah Jenkins ’00, and Brooke Thurman ’00.  Christie will be finishing her residency in pediatrics at Children’s Hospital Colorado in Aurora this June, and will then start a Pediatric Infectious Diseases Fellowship there in July.  Christie got married in August 2016 in Beaver Creek with multiple St. Anne’s alums in attendance including

IN LOVING MEMORY OF KENYATTA MCKENZIE ‘01 A message from Kesley Smith, Co-Chair of the Alumni Board Kenyatta McKenzie ‘01 put an immense amount of love, life, and light into this world--even back when we were all so young.  I wholeheartedly know he was one of the biggest gifts that life has given to me, and I am the person, teacher, and friend that I am today thanks to him.  His sense of humor, friendship, creativity, and unconditional love and acceptance (among much else) were hard to match.   A group of former classmates, parents, and teachers gathered one evening last fall in Kenyatta’s memory.  We spent that intentional time together sharing memories of his time with us at St. Anne’s.  It was a beautiful space that reflected his influence on all of our lives.  We each left the gathering with our own perennial that we will plant in our gardens to bloom in the springtime to be reminded of him.  We miss him dearly, but we know we are living legacies of his time on this earth and with us here in our St. Anne’s family.

CLASS OF 2006 6 Singer/songwriter Annie Anton ’06, performed her first solo show in Berkeley, CA this spring. It was an extraordinarily profound event. Her amazing song writing, voice, and message to bring her fans into their hearts through her art and personal vulnerability is awe inspiring. This is just the beginning of Annie’s journey! In addition to pursuing her music, Annie also works for the nonprofit Soul Shoppe, designing, conducting and facilitating workshops for elementary school children in the Bay Area to eliminate bullying, and help regulate their emotions. Annie graduated from Stanford University in 2014.

CLASS NOTES CLASS OF 2006 (CONT.) 1 Kelsey Chan-Chin ‘06 and Kenzie Chan-Chin ‘08 at Kelsey’s graduation from Tulane University where she received her MBA. 2 Spencer Scolnick ‘06 just finished his field assignment with Shell, working in the Gulf of Mexico as a drilling supervisor. He is now back in the office in New Orleans, continuing to support deepwater drilling operations in the Gulf. During his assignment, he was able to travel during his off hitches to Nicaragua, South Africa, the UK, several U.S. National Parks, and a couple other cities in the U.S.

team. Thanks to the flight benefits, he has traveled to Tokyo, Los Angeles, Denver, Washington, D.C., and hopes to visit Dublin, Paris, and Tel Aviv in the coming weeks. Thanks to Mr. Saslow and the Bolder Boulder, the running bug stuck, and last fall, he completed the Berlin Marathon in Germany during Oktoberfest! His sights are set on the New York Marathon this fall.

CLASS OF 2007 3 Sarah Frank ‘07 and boyfriend Jon Coryell. 4 Emily Lane ‘07 is entering her third year in the EMAP program working as an engineer for Dresser-Rand. This year’s placement moves her back to Colorado because they have an office in Ft. Collins.

Taylor Kelson ’06 is a first year law student at Columbia University. He has a degree in chemistry from Colorado College, and worked in a chemistry lab at CU Boulder for two years after CC, so his interest at the moment is in practicing patent law. To no one’s great surprise, if you ever knew Taylor, he’s loving law school!

Will Ellingson ‘06 moved to Chicago in October 2016 after spending six years in Washington, D.C. On Halloween, he began working for United Airlines as an analyst on the airline’s central financial analysis

Julia Kelson ’07 graduated from the University of Southern California with a degree in public relations.  She now lives in San Francisco where she works for a subsidiary of a world-wide public relations firm, and her practice is in representing technology companies.  Her favorite part of the job is the public relations work for the social causes that these companies support.  Julia also plays her viola in a San Francisco community orchestra. 5 Keegan Cross ‘07, Ashlin Cross ‘11, Tierney Cross ‘11, Aubree Cross, and

6 Fred Couzens ‘08 (Miami of Ohio ’16), Alex Sadler ‘08 (Denison ’16), James Rassenfoss ‘08 (Holy Cross ’16) and Bailey Tills ‘08 (Brown ’16) traveled with their moms for ten days exploring the Adriatic Islands of Croatia. Hiking, sea kayaking, touring medieval walled cities and towns, the group enjoyed the wonderful culture and breathtaking scenery. Highlights were the island of Hvar, Korchula’s (Marco Polo’s home) walled city and charm, the delicious olive oil and seafood, the clear beauty of the Adriatic and the dramatic limestone cliffs above the sea. They ended the trip in the spectacular city of Dubrovnic when all vowed to plan another adventure soon. 7 Congratulations to  Bailey Tills ‘08 who has joined the professional lacrosse team,

the Denver Outlaws! A graduate of Brown University, Tills helped lead the Bears to an appearance in the NCAA Men’s Division-1 Lacrosse tournament in 2016. Prior to Brown, Tills was a captain of Kent Denver’s lacrosse team where he was named the team’s “Most Valuable Attackman” and was the winner of the Begattaway Award for being the hardest working player who best embodies the program, players, and the game. While at Kent, he was also named Denver Athletic Club’s 6

High schoolers are equipped with various lesson plans, story books, and fun activities which they use to help elementary students understand the negative effects of bullying.

5 Dawson Storrs ’15 and Bobby Groene ’15 worked as young ranch hands last summer for a short spell.  They worked long and hard and learned a few things. Many days had them waking up at 5:00 AM to drive an hour and a half to work 450 calves and 450 heifers! 6 Ellie Wells ’15 partnered with St. Anne’s to donate our unsold books from our annual Used Book Sale in March to the African Library Project, an organization that coordinates book drives in the United States with starting small libraries in African villages. The book drive was a huge success on all fronts. he St. Anne’s Episcopal School Alumni Board awards the “Distinguished Alumni Award” to alumni who have demonstrated by example in their lives the school’s mission, “educating minds, enriching hearts, expanding horizons,” and whose accomplishments and contributions embody the values, beliefs and vision of St. Anne’s. The award will honor those who have made outstanding contributions to their fields and to those around them with consideration given to their involvement with St. Anne’s.

We hope this award serves as an inspiration to future St. Anne’s alumni to continue the “giving back” they started while students at the school. The St. Anne’s Alumni Board is launching the award nomination process this summer. Nominations will close by September 30, 2017.
