GROUP READ-ALOUD TIPS

Reading aloud to a group of children takes a little practice.  Here are a few tips to make this experience fun for you and the children.

Selecting Books
  • Choose books that you and your child love.
  • Choose books with large pictures and simple text.
  • Choose books that will appeal to girls and boys.
  • Bring favorites from home or select books from the library.
  • You will need three to five books to read during the session.

Reading Aloud to a Group of Children
  • Practice reading the book before you read it to the group. Read with expression and feeling. Pace the story to add interest--reading too fast makes comprehension difficult.
  • Introduce the book by reading the title, author, and illustrator.
  • Hold the book to the side as you read so children can see the pictures.
  • After reading the pages, move the book slowly from one side of the room to the other so children can look at the pictures.
  • Make sure the children can hear you--ask if everyone can hear.
  • Look at your listeners often.

Please arrive in the library ten minutes before your scheduled time to get ready to read and to select books.

Thank you for taking time to prepare for this special storytime!

If you will not be able to read on the assigned date, please call the library at 303-756-9481.
