Letter from Craig A. Knippenberg
Dear Families, Life is short and pain is long.
And we were put here for one thing, to help each other.
And we were put here for one thing, to help each other.
This poem has helped me through some difficult times, and it is at the heart of what we will be doing for each other in the days and months to come. As Alan mentioned, the loss of Sophie, Owen, Caroline and Parker is inconceivable. Having our second trauma this year is numbing and will require all of our shared strength.
For starters, I would strongly recommend that each of you share the news with your children in the comfort and security of your own home before school on Monday. (If you are traveling, when you receive these communications, you may wish to wait until coming home on Sunday if you are able to manage the emotional stress.) Give them the straight facts and then tell them the plans here at school for Monday. Emphasize that we are going to be here for each other as classmates, parents and faculty. (Please reference the website for previous letters and suggestions on talking to your children.)
After telling them and allowing them to respond with thoughts, feelings or questions, it would be a good time to curl up together and watch a movie or read a book together. It is more than ok should your children want to sleep with you on Sunday evening.
I would also encourage a very gentle handling of your discussions and remember that on the heals of our loss of Sammy and Grace, feeling numb or not wanting to talk about it may be the best medicine right now. (Our counseling services in the weeks to come will be titrated in this manner as well.)
As mentioned by Alan, counselors from other independent schools and my office will be available on Monday at the after prayer service gatherings. These gatherings will be an important time to support each other on all levels. Additional counseling services will be available throughout the week. While I will be mostly around campus, you may also page me at any time should you need immediate assistance (303-855-9011).
Sincerely,
Craig A. Knippenberg
